Serial Cancellations Project

Hello everyone,

During the last three weeks, the Serials Unit has been working on a major serial cancellations project. The lists of cancellations were compiled by subject area specialists in response to budget cuts of this fiscal year. There were approximately 750 titles to be canceled; the number included serial subscriptions and standing orders.

We are excited to report that, although short staffed, the Serials Unit was able to complete the project before the deadline of August 29th.

A big thank you goes to Paul who agreed to contact Blackwell and Coutts about the cancellations of standing orders. Thank you Paul!

In a few days, I’ll post in this blog the breakdown of cancellations by vendor and subject area.

Thanks! Raimonda

Thanks to Jason & Other News

Here’s a shout out to Jaons for doing such a great job as Interim Chair of the department. We all appreciate his efforts and willingness to fill in over the summer. Unfortunately for A & L, Jason is now officially a member of the IT (effective 8/24). What is our loss obviously is the IT Department’s gain, but Jason will still be working at the same workstations (at least for now) and will be working with many of us routinely on projects and initiatives that involve his IT skills. Besides, he promises to still come to A & L parties..

Travel Requests are due - remember to submit requests even if you are not asking for funding; if authorized by the Travel Committee, staff can still attend library and other related conferences with paid leave.

Here’s my chance to give my Blog welcome to Chris Poehlmann. We’re happy to have you part of the dept.!

360 Link

We’ve set-up a test of 360 Link from Serials Solutions through Metalib at this URL - http://metalib-test.fcla.edu/V and encourage everyone to experiment with it and let us know what problems you encounter and what suggestions you have.  There are some known issues.  Some resources searched by Metalib require the database vendor to enable 360 Link for it to work properly.  Since we don’t want to disable SFX until we migrate to 360 Link we’ve not asked these databases to be enabled.  Some of the popular databases that fall into this catagory are:  JSTOR, OVID, & Wiley.

One of the biggest changes to note is that when 360 finds a full text source, clicking on the Find it@UF button will take users directly to the article.  We’re also in the process of customizing and branding the results and helper pages, so those may look slightly different over the next few days.

A few excellent questions were raised by Jay Wiese who is an early tester of the application.   Below are his questions and my answers:

Q.  What determines which vendor’s fulltext content appears in the pop-up if there are multiple vendors that carry the content?

A.  Currently, the default priority is alphabetical.  However, we have the ability to change the priority to whatever order is desired.  We’ll be working with selectors over the next few weeks to set a custom display order.

Q.  The pop-up is a bit cramped since it displays in a small window (about 640×480). Is there any way to make the pop-up default to full-screen?

A.  Possibly.  It’s not a setting we can control on the 360 Link set-up, but the database vendor may be able to change the default screen size.  We may be able to do it in house as well.  I’ll find out and post the answer here.

Q.  If I click on ‘Get additional resources related to this’, there’s no ‘back’ button; How can I get back to the original screen?

A.  Currently the only way to get back is to right-click and select “Back” from the menu.  We’ll explore adding something like a “Previous Screen” button.
