October department meeting & party

We tentatively plan on having the department meeting and birthday party on Wednesday, October 29th.

The schedule will be: department meeting (10-11:30), then department birthday party (11:30/12:00–).
If there are no posts about conflicts with this date by the week’s end, we’ll move forward with planning.

Steve suggested that this be used as one forum to collect possible agenda items; if anyone has one in mind already, please post it as a comment.

Thanks–
Paul

A & L’s Birthday Parties

Hello!

After asking each Unit Head their preference as to when they would like their Unit to help setting -up and cleaning at each  A & L Dept.’s Birthday Party, they graciously agreed to the following:

October, 2008…………….Monographs Unit

January, 2009…………….Electronic Resources

 April, 2009………………..Serials Unit

 July, 2009…………………Paying Unit

 This will help to better organize the event now that the Birthday Parties will take place after the Departmental Quarterly Meeting.

 Thank you for helping to make our Department a better one

Regards,  Sonia

Department Meetings – the new policy

I originally posted this as a comment to comments to a post asking for feedback on the dept. meetings. After further reflection, I believe the summation requires a new post for easier viewing. Here’s the message —–

From today’s Unit Managers meeting (Raimonda was not in attendance, but judging by her comments to this post she agrees with the following):

Final results of feedback on dept. meetings – most of you prefer quarterly meetings, so the department will have quarterly meetings on the morning before the bday parties; we will have an agenda put together by the Unit Managers & Chair (everybody can and should contribute to the agenda – we encourage input!); I agree with Chris on the idea of having round robin reports from the Unit Managers & Staff; also, as Angie suggests, we’ll share the agenda beforehand so folks can prepare for the discussion; also, most want to have the dept. meetings outside room 200, so we have access to a computer/screen for presenting topics – Smathers 1A or LibEast Conference will be used as available. Thanks Chris, Paul, Angie, Raimonda and Sonia for your helpful feedback.  Steve

Aleph v.19 – yes or no?

Everyone, the SUS’s Technical Services Planning Committee (TSPC) is looking into the question of whether the libraries should update to Aleph v.19 in Summer ‘09 or skip the in-between migration and wait for v.20. The SUS Library Directors will be discussing it soon and TSPC is planning on providing their overview and recommendation. V.19 involves some improvements to Acq. functionality, so the question really comes down to ‘is the hassle of migrating to v.19 and then again to v.20 worth the improvements v.19 offer?’ It really might be worth it; for example, it’s possible that with v.19 Jack wouldn’t have to have separate PeopleSoft and Aleph budget postings, as supposedly v.19 allows accounting cross-posting (hopefully that’s the correct way to explain it). Please visit the FCLA SWIKI (link below) and look over the v.19 upgrades and provide me your thoughts. I will compile all responses and forward to the TSPC. Thanks, Steve

2 new order status codes

I just wanted you to know, that we now have 2 new status codes for orders, so we can track credits more efficiently. Anyone aware of a credit due us should change the status of the order in the General tab in the order list to:

CWC=closed  waiting for credit or

OCW=open waiting for credit

Thanks to Jason for helping with this.

Questions regarding Department Meetings

Everybody: I understand over the summer the department met a couple of times to discuss projects and once to welcome Chris. With a department party approaching on Thurs., it’s made me wonder whether we should revise the format of dept. meetings altogether. As I’m wide open to suggestions, it would be interesting (and helpful) to hear what people in the dept. have to say about our meetings. I’m not asking about the parties per se, since we covered that last year and the overwhelming response was to keep having quarterly birthday parties. Now, if you would be so kind, please respond to the following:

(1) How often should A & L hold department meetings -  Monthly? Quarterly? Only as needed?

(2) Should the meetings be structured (i.e. agenda items) or should they be general forums for announcements or discussion? If you prefer general announcement type meetings, should we have some structure to the forum  (perhaps round robin updates from Unit Managers)?

(3) Should we have separate quarterly parties or should we combine the parties with department meetings (as they do in C&M)?

(4) Should we hold them in room 200 or go elsewhere (Library East Conference Room for example)?

Your feedback will be most appreciated. Steve
