Emerging Technologies Advisory Group Meeting Minutes
July 15, 2009  1:30 – 3:00

Attending: Ellie Bushhousen, Michele Crump, Valrie Davis, Jason Fleming, Margeaux Johnson, Laura Jordan, Ann Lindell, Tom Minton, Missy Shoop, Traveller Wendell

Announcements: None

Emerging Technologies Blog:
The Emerging Technologies blog is now available, although still being refined by Logan. Everyone should have a login:
http://blogs.uflib.ufl.edu/wp-admin/

Social Networking:
There are now twitter feeds for Smathers, AFA and Science.  http://www.uflib.ufl.edu/tools/
Barbara Hood will be the twitter contact for the Smathers feed and people from the different branches/departments will need to feed her possible topics/text.  Jason suggested E.T. develop some general twitter policies/guidelines to assist people with tweeting.

Jason demoed the new LibX toolbar ISBN search.  The “group 1″ and “group 2″ might be lost on many patrons but it does attempt to deliver a title when the library may not own a particular ISBN.  Also, with the LibX toolbar, a Findit@UF button will appear within wikipedia references.

Val gave a quick update on GatorScholar. (see previous post for details).

Michele and Bill Covey may be developing, with Duke University, a new open source integrated library system (ILS).  The development would be funded by a Mellon Grant. Michele will report on this, as it develops.  (see: http://www.libraryjournal.com/blog/1090000309/post/1600031160.html)

2nd Life: Laura displayed the new Second Life bus, called “Gainesville FL 1958″.  Laura has taught several CITT classes on Second Life, although none this summer.

Endeca/Mango Update – Colleen was out this week.  Will lbe mentioned at the next meeting.

Missy and Stacey asked how feasible it would be to advertise on the library screen savers.  They will write up a proposal for Michele to find out from Systems whether it would be possible.

Michele reported that there may be a mini-grant specific for developing/exploring Emerging Technologies. More to come on that topic.

Margeaux announced the SPARKY awards contest, taking place this fall. She also showed everyone Scivee (http://www.scivee.tv/) and her new $100 mini portable video camera. Scivee is basically a digital learning object repository, specifically limited to scientific topics, freely available to anyone. The video camera holds up to 120 minutes of video: a potential way to include user-created content on our website, in instructions, etc.
