Is dealing with large files starting to feel a little a lot like juggling with fire???

So, for the last 30 minutes you’ve been using one of the digital microform readers in Library West, you finish scanning all the images that you needed, when suddenly you realize that you have 75MB of image files to save and have forgotten to bring your thumb drive! You could email all of the images to yourself but that would mean attaching the files in batches. You could zip the files and email them to yourself but your email won’t let you send a file that big. What to do?
Here are a couple of programs that will allow you to send large files:
- has a 100MB file limit
- offers the choice of allowing your URL to expire between 1-5 hours or 1-7 days.
- has a 250MB file limit
- allows you to password protect your URL for privacy
- offers the choice of allowing your URL to expire between 1 or 7 days
MediaFire is a little different from Send-u-it and File-URLs. It’s a free file hosting site which will allow you unlimted storage for your project images, PPT presentations, documents, etc. I use it to easily store backups of my PowerPoint presentation files. In the event of USB-drive failure before/during one of my presentations, I can access my backup files online and download them directly from a browser- no software install needed.
The free version offers:
- Unlimited storage
- Up to 100MB per file
- Unlimited uploads
- Unlimited downloads
- Unlimited bandwidth
- Image galleries
One of the downsides to the free version is annoyance of seeing ads on the site but it’s a small price to pay for convenience though and the ads aren’t flashy and outrageous as they are on some sites.
So dear reader, how do you deal with your large files? Do you use a special program? Any tips or tricks to share?
