Conversations in Children’s Literature

On June 16th, Linda Martin, Library Media Specialist and 2009 Bechtel Fellow at the Baldwin Library of Historical Children’s Literature, will present “Storytelling in the Content Areas.”

Drawing from her research in the Baldwin Library, Ms. Martin will discuss specific ways in which stories can be used as a framework for teaching a variety of subjects in science, math and the language arts and enhancing students’ comprehension of these subjects, particularly in elementary grades. She is developing lists of topic areas and relevant, grade-appropriate books and stories based on national standards, and she is eager to get these lists-and storytelling-into the classrooms. Please join us to hear about her exciting endeavors.

Conversations in Children’s Literature is a new series of presentations and discussions about various aspects of children’s literature and culture. The series is aimed at teachers, librarians, academics, writers, and all adults who value the books and cultural materials that are produced for children. Reflecting our desire for an inclusive, multidisciplinary look at children’s literature, the series approaches the creation, distribution, and uses of children’s books from a multitude of perspectives.

A talk, followed by discussion and refreshments, will take place on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM at Goerings Book Store (1717 NW First Avenue). Parking is available for a fee in the St. Augustine lot facing the book store or for free on the street or on campus.

Conversations in Children’s Literature is sponsored by the Center for Children’s Literature and Culture and the Baldwin Library of Historical Children’s Literature. For more information about any of the talks or to be added to the Conversations listserv, which will provide information about future speakers, please contact Ramona Caponegro at ramonac@ufl.edu or at (352) 392-6650, ext. 290.
