Something funny . . .
We have a posterboard in our break room that has pictures of stuff we want to happen for our library and our personal lives.
There’s pictures of a nice kitchen, vacation places, cake, etc.

I posted a picture of some old guy playing accordian.

I decided to become a librarian when I was in about the 5th grade. When I told people about this a lot of people would say that librarians were all old maids (this was in about 1965). My response was that my mother, who was a librarian, met my father in the library. That is a true story. My mom was working in the public library and my dad was renting a room from another family in the small town. They told my dad he should go to the library to meet Sally Ann (my mom). He went in on Friday, February 13th and met her but he was too nervous to ask her out. So he left the library and went to a pay phone to call her and ask her out. He asked if he could drive her home after work. She told him she had a date for that night but not for the next night. So, my parents first date was on Valentine’s Day. In July they were engaged and they were married in December. True Story and a family favorite!!

I remeber in grade school the librarian coming into our class to share a story with us. She was reading Dr. Seuss’ “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blus Fish. As she sat down to read one of my classmates noticed that she had on one red shoe and one blue shoe and one sock and one stocking. The class found this extremely funny (2nd graders) while the Librarian was very embarresses and turned very, very red.

When I was a new reference librarian almost 20 years ago and fresh out of library school I remember a mentor/teacher of mine telling me the importance of listening to a patron and doing a good reference “interview.”
It brings to mind one of my older colleagues who had a young student come in and inquire about “Shakers.” The colleague pulled out all kinds of reference books and materials on religions including Protestants and Quakers. Boy did her face turn red when the young girl said with an exasperated look on her face that “she was a cheerleader” and the “shakers” were actually pom-poms! It taught me a lesson that day that I never forgot.
